The first real test of winter equipment should never be the first snowfall.
A truck may have finished last season running perfectly and still develop corrosion, weak electrical connections, deteriorated hoses, seized hardware, or battery problems while sitting through the off-season. For contractors, preseason maintenance is therefore less about making equipment look ready and more about discovering failures while there is still time to fix them.

Regional Winter Conditions and Equipment Readiness

Look closely at the cutting edge for uneven wear. Examine the moldboard, frame, welds, mounting hardware, pins, springs, shoes, pivot points, and attachment system.

Hydraulics and Electrical: Small Faults Become Big Delays
Hydraulic problems have an inconvenient habit of revealing themselves when the blade is full of snow.
Inspect hoses for abrasion, brittleness, cracking, wet fittings, and signs of leakage. Examine cylinders and accessible hydraulic components, then verify the fluid condition and level according to the equipment manual.
Several major manufacturers include hydraulic-fluid service in preseason procedures. Electrical connectors deserve the same attention.

Then test every function.
Raise. Lower. Angle. Change blade configuration where applicable. Run the lights. Operate accessories.
Do not stop when the plow moves once.
Cycle the system repeatedly and watch for slow operation, irregular sounds, intermittent connections, or hydraulic seepage.

Spreaders, Tires, Lights, Tools, and Spares
Plow maintenance receives most of the attention, but an ice-control route can fail just as easily because the spreader stops feeding.
Run the Spreader Before Loading It
Clean the hopper and inspect it for damage. Depending on the equipment design, check the conveyor or auger, spinner, bearings, chain tension, gearbox, wiring, controller, vibrator, mounting hardware, and tie-down components.

The spare-parts kit should reflect the equipment on that particular truck. Carrying parts for another unit in the fleet does little good at 3 a.m.
Test It Before Winter Tests You
The final preseason task should resemble actual work.
Mount the equipment and perform a controlled test run. Operate the plow through its full intended range. Test the spreader. Drive at low speed. Reverse. Confirm lighting and visibility. Listen for unusual movement or vibration.
Then inspect the equipment again.
A fitting that looked dry while parked may show seepage after cycling. A loose connection may become obvious only after vibration. A spreader may operate unloaded but behave differently after material is introduced according to its approved testing procedure.
Document what was inspected, what was replaced, fluid or service dates, repairs still pending, and which technician or operator completed the check. Give every truck and attachment a clear readiness status rather than relying on someone remembering that it was “probably done.”
