Sand and salt are often discussed as competing ice-control products, but they perform fundamentally different jobs.
Salt is a de-icer. It dissolves into available moisture and lowers the freezing point of water, helping weaken or melt the bond between ice and pavement.
Sand does not melt ice. Its purpose is mechanical: coarse particles create additional friction on top of a slippery surface.
That difference should determine when each material is used.
A property experiencing fluctuating winter surface response may need melting during one part of the day and traction several hours later. When temperatures are moderate, de-icing can help restore pavement. If temperatures plunge and melting becomes slow or impractical, improving grip may become the more useful objective.
That matters on entrances, parking lots, ramps, driveways, service lanes, and pedestrian routes where waiting for ice to disappear is not always realistic.
For Calgary properties, the material decision should therefore begin with pavement conditions and operational needs—not simply with whatever bag happens to be stored beside the door.
Cold Weather Changes Material Performance
Temperature is where the sand-versus-salt comparison becomes much more practical.

The Salt Stops Working Before Winter Does
The colder a surface becomes, the more important it is to separate the goal of removing ice from the goal of making ice safer to travel over temporarily.
Alberta's highway guidance notes that conventional salt loses effectiveness rapidly when road-surface temperature falls below about -10°C and recommends sand when temperatures are too low for practical salt use. Where Salt Earns Its Keep
Salt makes sense when the pavement temperature allows it to form an effective brine and the objective is to loosen or eliminate ice.

Salt may also support preventive treatment when conditions are suitable, reducing how strongly subsequent snow or ice bonds to the surface.
But de-icer should not become a substitute for plowing, shoveling, or removing slush.

Where Sand Takes Over
Sand becomes useful when immediate friction matters more than waiting for melting.
Think about a steep driveway during deep cold, a parking-lot incline, a temporary pedestrian route, or an icy access point that must remain usable while temperatures are too low for efficient conventional salt performance.
Sand can improve grip quickly.
What it cannot do is remove the underlying ice.
Once conditions warm, the frozen layer may still require mechanical removal, de-icing, or both.
Cleanup, Drainage, and Accessibility
Sand is sometimes presented as the environmentally simple alternative to salt. The reality is more complicated.
Abrasive material remains on the property after the ice disappears. It can accumulate along curbs, enter catch basins, migrate toward drainage infrastructure, and eventually require sweeping or collection.
Salt creates a different issue because dissolved chlorides travel with meltwater.

Many properties do not need to choose exclusively between sand and salt.
A mixed strategy can assign each material to the job it performs best.
Use Traction Where Immediate Grip Matters
Prioritize abrasives on locations where maintaining friction is critical during severe cold:
steep approaches
temporary icy vehicle routes
exposed stopping areas
difficult driveway grades
locations where conventional salt is responding too slowly
The objective is not bare pavement. It is improved temporary traction until conditions allow further treatment.
Use De-Icer Where Removing the Bond Matters
Use appropriate de-icing material where temperature and moisture conditions support melting and where removing bonded ice provides meaningful operational benefit.
Entrances, pedestrian crossings, loading areas, accessible paths, and busy parking zones may justify more aggressive ice removal than low-traffic areas.

Instead, define the result required from the surface.

Mechanical clearing should still come first whenever practical. Remove loose snow and slush so the remaining treatment addresses the actual problem rather than being buried beneath material that should have been moved.
