Jorge, Chainsaw and I – Fixing the Chainsaw
Jorge and I looked at each other and tried to decide what we ought to do. The chain of the chainsaw had just whipped off and now the chainsaw blade was in disrepair. We would have to replace the chain and the blade. Luckily we had planned to stay out at Jorge’s place for a few days, so we were not too worried. We could make the trip into town, but we really weren’t even sure if we would be able to find the parts that we needed and the town was quite a drive away.
Even in this remote area, Jorge had access to the internet, however, and he was able to browse around looking for an e-commerce site that provided parts for his particular chainsaw. The saw was a Bosch make model AKE30B. It was fortunate that he knew exactly what to look for and he knew what he needed. There was a store that had the blade and chain in stock and we placed the order. Now that the dilemma was settled, we had other work to do.
Jorge had lived out on the plains of Wyoming for the past seven years. His ranch was nestled in a southern canyon, and he enjoyed the peace of the area. He had plenty of grazing land for his cattle and over the next few days we gave him our support in herding the cattle across the Wyoming landscape. The cattle drive took us through the beautiful back-country and up around the mountains.
Seeing as how Jorge was an older man, he loved to tell us all about the way things were before the technologies of today. He described milking the cows by hand when he was a boy, and everything up to power tools. We could tell that the event of just a few days ago had gotten him a bit riled up. He was in the mood to rant.
He talked about how easy people have it nowadays. The convenience of power tools and all types of electronics was but a whisper when he was in his youthful years. When he needed to chop a forest, he had to suck it in and play Paul Bunyan just as we had earlier. When we returned to the ranch four days later, the blade and chain for the saw were already there and we were able to continue the task at hand.
Jorge’s attitude had changed slightly toward technology because he realized that he could get other work done while technology was working for him to help him to get his tasks done. Jorge went straight back to his tree massacre while my friend and I spent the rest of the event with our axes in hand learning to be grateful for the technology of our day.
